Here’s how I make bacon blanket for our burgers. Everybody loves bacon in my family, so this goes over quite well. If you are thinking to yourself that you don’t like bacon, this is not the thing for you. Anyway, here goes. Basically, I’m going to show two ways to make a burger-sized woven blanket of bacon. For one, I use three pieces, for the other, only two. This could be made with more bacon, but I feel that two or three pieces of bacon is more than enough for most people. Maybe those Keto folks out there might like a four or five piece version, I dunno.
First, the three-piece. You’ll need:
3 – pieces of bacon
kitchen shears (or knife)
Aluminum foil
Hot grill
Start by cutting the bacon in half.
Then lay four pieces over another as shown and weave all the pieces together.
For the two-piece version, follow the same steps with smaller pieces. You want to cut two pieces in half, then slice them in half lengthwise.
Lay out the bacon and weave as shown.
After weaving is complete, make yourself a little tray out of aluminum foil.
To transfer the bacon, I just lay the foil on top of the bacon and then flip the cutting board over. Then I fold up the sides. This makes a little tray to keep all the bacon grease contained so that we don’t have a fire on the grill.
I cooked the bacon at the same time that I cooked some mushroom burgers using indirect grilling. You could also add these to stuffed burgers for a whole new level of burger goodness! Put the bacon on when you flip your burgers. Cook for 5 minutes and flip them. It really only takes about 1o minutes or so to cook the bacon. You can also cook the bacon on a griddle or in a pan, but I already had the grill hot, so I might as well use it. If you like it more crispy, leave it longer, but beware that it will burn quickly if left too long on the grill. You can see below that the edges of mine were starting to burn, but this was toward the 20 minute mark. I got distracted taking pictures.
Note: Be careful not to poke a hole in your tray or place the bacon directly over the hot coals or you’ll have a fire in a flash! This will burn your bacon blanket to a crisp! If you do catch your grill on fire, close the lid and close the vents on the lid and underneath. This will choke out all the oxygen and extinguish the flame.
Finally, add the bacon blanket to your burger and enjoy! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for updates and new recipe ideas. Now get to grilling!
